A Successful Audio Slideshow from Los Angeles Times

“Audio slide show: His body a prison”

The link posted above takes you to an audio slideshow that was produced by Liz O. Baylen from the Los Angeles Times.  I think this is such a good audio slideshow because it really shows us what everyday life is like for Spencer Sullivan as a quadriplegic.

Spencer Sullivan is now a quadriplegic after a neck surgery he had in 2001.  After the surgery, he was given too much medication and was not monitored. He now receives 24/7 care and his parents moved to his town to assist him.

The pictures show us Sullivan’s everyday routine and how much he depends on his parents.  His mother’s interview is very emotional but it helps to capture how much pain this family has gone through.  You can tell through the pictures that his parents do anything they can to make his life easier.

My favorite part of this slideshow is when they show Sullivan doing therapy in the pool.  The nat sound of the pool helps make me feel like part of the action.  It also shows how challenging going into the pool can be for Sullivan.  It is his main activity during the day so I feel it was very important for Baylen to capture.

The pictures also show that Sullivan is confined to his chair and can no longer do little things in life like brush his hair.  It is these moments that help tell his story.

Overall this slideshow was very good and I would not have done it any differently.

Brainstorming for the Audio Slideshow

I have two possible subjects for my audio slideshow project.

1. Rob Weltner is the President of Operation Splash. Volunteers from this organization have rescued over 1,000,000 pounds of garbage from Long Island shores since 1990.  This garbage is slowly killing the sea creatures who call the south shore bays home.  Everyday the members of the SPLASH team take out one of their three boats  to remove debris from the water.  For my audio slideshow, I would go out with Weltner and his team on the boat and film them collecting garbage.  I would also interview Weltner, who worked on an 11-year project that  stopped 2.5 million gallons of sewage a day from going into the bay at Jones Beach.  I think the work that Weltner and his team do would make good visuals and I already have spoken to him and he has a good story to tell.

It is evident that blogging is a positive phenomena that will continue to have major effects on how news is distributed by journalists and digested by the public.

Blogging is a way of life.

Growing up, I would always try to keep a journal but I was just absolutely awful at it. I was never be able to right for more than two or three days straight. But I wanted to write, so I turned to blogging. Well, what I thought was blogging back then – really I just wrote in a continuous word document. Now that I’m older, I enjoy reading blogs more because it keeps me up to speed with the latest happenings without having to sit down and read through some dry news articles. My top three favorite blogs would have to be: Continue reading Blogging is a way of life.
